After years of working in industry, manufacturing, investment, and entrepreneurship, one question has increasingly occupied my thinking:

Why do so many scientifically promising technologies struggle to become investable industrial businesses?

The problem is often not the science itself.

A technology may be technically validated and still remain far from an industrial investment decision. Between scientific validation and commercial deployment lies a difficult transition: engineering scale-up, economic validation, intellectual property, regulatory requirements, supply-chain readiness, market assumptions, governance, and ultimately, investment risk.

I have come to believe that this transition needs to be managed as a discipline in its own right.

Scientists should not be expected to become industrial developers overnight. Investors should not be expected to finance unresolved technical uncertainty. And industry needs more than promising research; it needs technologies that have been systematically prepared for deployment and investment.

This thinking is increasingly shaping my work with OAK Foundation: building an institutional bridge between science, industry, and capital, and exploring how validated technologies can be systematically prepared for industrial commercialization.

There is a significant difference between a technology that works and a technology that is ready for an industrial investment decision.

Understanding and managing that difference may be one of the most interesting challenges in technology commercialization.
